Material Environmental Impact Calculator
Estimate production and freight CO₂ for an industrial material quantity using verified source datasets and transparent assumptions. One material at a time.
Estimated impact
What this does
This estimates the cradle-to-gate production footprint of a quantity of one material, and optionally the freight CO₂ to move it, using values MatQuo has verified from the primary source. Production = quantity × the source emission factor; freight = tonne-km × a well-to-wheel factor (the same engine and factors as the freight CO₂ calculator). Production and freight are shown separately with their shares.
Why functional units matter
Every source has a functional unit: polymers and steel are per kg of resin/steel, flat-glass EPDs are per m² of 4 mm glass, container glass is per kg of finished container. These are not interchangeable, which is why this tool shows the underlying unit for every result and does not compare different materials against each other.
Production vs freight emissions
For most bulk materials, production dominates the cradle-to-gate + transport total; freight becomes significant only over long distances or by air. Keeping them separate makes that visible instead of hiding it in one number.
Limitations
Planning estimates from industry-average or source-specific datasets and the assumptions shown — not product-specific LCAs, EPDs, environmental declarations or regulatory assessments. Steel's Module D end-of-life credit is reported separately and never subtracted from the A1–A3 production figure. Aluminium is a global average. Copper is an indicative range. PET uses an older dataset than the 2026 polyolefins.
