Polypropylene (PP)

What the EU actually pays for imported polypropylene: the latest customs unit value in € per tonne, the tonnes moving in and out, the top non-EU origins and the duty that applies to each.

Polypropylene: a higher customs average alongside a sizeable import deficit

The June 2026 Extra-EU PP import unit value was €1,452/t, 26.4% above June 2025. Imports were 148,368 t and the volume balance was a deficit of 84,098 t. Saudi Arabia was the largest recorded origin by import value share at 19.6%.

What changed

The import and export customs averages were both higher year on year; the export unit value increased 31.1%. The broad plastics PPI was also higher, as context rather than a PP quote.

What did not

HS 3902 aggregates primary-form PP trade. The customs average still mixes grades, origins and terms and cannot show an executable supplier price.

What buyers should monitor

Origin mix, preference evidence, freight and actual PP-grade quotations. Compare Saudi, Korean and other offers on landed cost rather than headline quote alone.

Polypropylene is one of the most versatile plastics — used in automotive parts, packaging, fibres, containers and household goods — so its cost ripples through a huge range of manufacturing.

This page tracks the European Union's polypropylene trade with the rest of the world, live from official data: the import and export unit values in euros per tonne (declared trade averages, not spot prices), tonnes and value, the trade balance, the euro–dollar rate, and which non-EU countries the EU buys its polypropylene from. Below that are the EU import tariff on polypropylene and the customs HS/CN codes. Note: this page covers pure polypropylene (CN 390210); propylene copolymers (390230) are tracked separately.

How this page is built. Every number above is fetched live in your browser from Eurostat COMEXT (EU international trade in goods, HS 3902) and the European Central Bank (euro reference rates). The unit value is the declared customs value divided by the net mass — a trade average across every shipment in the month, not a spot or contract quote; see how customs unit values differ from market prices. COMEXT publishes with roughly a two-month lag and revises earlier months, so the latest point can move. Duty rates are indicative and come from the European Commission's TARIC / Access2Markets; confirm the legal rate before you trade on it.

Worked example — illustrative FOB quote to landed cost

  1. Assume an illustrative supplier FOB quote of €1,330/t, excluding international freight and insurance. This is not the customs unit value above or a current supplier offer.
  2. Eurostat import values are already CIF: do not add international freight and insurance again.
  3. Add sea freight and insurance to a north-European port, say €90/t → CIF €1,420/t.
  4. Apply the duty for the origin you are buying from — 6.5% MFN for origins with no EU trade agreement → €1,512/t. An FTA origin at 0% skips this step entirely, which is why the duty table by country matters as much as the price.
  5. Add local handling and inland haulage, say €20/t.
Landed cost ≈ €1,532/t — run your own numbers in the landed cost calculator.

Polypropylene imports by origin country

The applicable import tariff depends on the country of origin, so it pays to know your supplier. Explore individual origins:

What the numbers mean

The "unit value" is the declared trade value divided by net mass — a customs-derived average price, not a live market or contract quote. "Extra-EU" trade is trade with countries outside the EU. All figures come from Eurostat's COMEXT database and the European Central Bank, reused under their free-reuse terms with attribution, and update monthly with roughly a two-month lag. MatQuo is an analytical tool, not investment advice.

The figures already displayed above are customs trade averages. Compare the same period, product scope and origin mix; do not interpret a change as a quote for an individual grade.

Polypropylene price and import questions

What does the polypropylene price on MatQuo mean?

€1,452/t was the June 2026 Extra-EU polypropylene import customs unit value in the existing Eurostat snapshot. It is declared trade value divided by net mass, rather than a spot or contract price. Grade, origin and shipment mix affect the average, so confirm a comparable supplier quotation before making a purchasing decision.

What does MatQuo show about polypropylene imports?

148,368 t of polypropylene imports were recorded in the existing June 2026 Extra-EU snapshot, with a volume deficit of 84,098 t. The page also shows origins and monthly flows from Eurostat COMEXT. These aggregate trade figures provide sourcing context; they do not prove shortage, availability or terms for an individual PP grade.

What is the HS code for polypropylene resin?

390210 identifies polypropylene in primary forms; the EU CN code is 39021000. Propylene copolymers have a different branch, 390230, with CN code 39023000. The page's product scope matters when comparing trade data. Finished packaging and other PP articles require their own classification rather than automatically inheriting the resin code.
